Academy Professor Lauri Aaltonen, Molecular and Cancer Biology Program & Department of Medical Genetics, Biomedicum Helsinki, P.O. Box 63 (Haartmaninkatu 8), FI-00014 University of Helsinki, FINLAND
Lauri Aaltonen is an expert in molecular genetics and molecular biology of colon cancer.
Aaltonen Group
The group works in close contact with clinical researchers to unravel molecular background of human tumor susceptibility, utilizing tools provided by the Human Genome Project and other recent advances in biosciences. The aim is to create information on human tumorigenesis, to facilitate cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The group is currently short-listed for the 2005 Descartes prize.
The research of the group focuses on human tumor susceptibility. Particular focus of interest has been hereditary colorectal cancer, where the group has contributed to several key discoveries. The current focus is more on unraveling the molecular background of low penetrance colorectal cancer predisposition, as well as characterization of hereditary and sporadic colorectal cancer utilizing expression array technology. Molecular background events in microsatellite unstable colorectal cancer is one of our long term interests.
